Yup, you got it - it is preferable to have your scratch disk on a separate physical drive.

Sounds like a Windows system issue to me... you wouldn't get that happening on a Mac, sorry!

Is it true that the photoshop app and the scratch disk have to be on the same drive or partition? I thought that the application can be on the drive with the OS (the boot up drive) and the scratch disk can be on a separate striped RAID 0 array.

Upgraded to new computer with Win7 8gb Memory and 1 and 2 TB hard drives. Installed my photoshop7.0 and try to switch scratch disk to second drive. Photoshop won't start (have to delete preferences file to get restarted) as it says scratch disk is full but it has over 1.5TB free. Does photoshop 7.0 not recognize large drives or large memory space?

RAID0 stripes your data across several hard drives, but with no backup so it is not really a good idea to use it as if one drive fails all data will be lost.

Keep a separate drive for your scratch disk.
