Free Transforming linked vector shape layers together – the right way!

You probably have discovered that if you try and Free Transform (Command+T) some linked vector shape layers, only the active layer transforms, instead of all the linked layers together-most annoying!

This was bugging me for a while – my first workaround, which was not ideal in all situations was to put all the vector shape layers in a layer set, click just on the layer set folder, and then applying Free Transform. This works, but what if you have a complex layered document with a number of vector shape layers in different layer sets you want to transform…not an ideal solution!

The actual solution is very simple, link up the vector shape layers you want to transform, click on one of the layers and simply hide its vector path visibility (Command+H). Now when you Free Transform, instead of just Free Transforming the active layers vector path, it transforms them all together – simple!

BONUS TIP
Sometimes its practical to have more than one vector shape on a layer – especially for background design elements. This means you can effectively change the colour, opacity and layer effects of a number of elements all at once, rather than alter individual layers.

To copy a vector path from one layer to another, select your entire paths anchor points, copy it, select your destination vector shape layer and paste. It will even paste in exactly the same place – very useful!
