Switch to the Photoshop move tool whilst another tool is active

Here’s a little gem or a tip – are you getting sick of keep on switching between tools in when you are working? The tool that gets used most in Photoshop is the move tool, and here’s a little tip to stop you having to switch between whatever tool you have active (eg brush) and the move tool.

Simply hold down the Apple key on your keyboard when you have another tool active, this will temporarily switch your tool to the move tool as long as you keep it held down. When you are ready to return to your previous tool, just let go of the Apple key and there you go!

Oh, and don’t forget that hitting V on the keyboard is the shortcut to get to the move tool, if you want to use it for more than a quick re-position!

What’s the equivalent on a PC? The Alt- or the Ctrl-key?

I think it’s CTRL – although I don’t have a PC with Photoshop on to check that out. Whenever I’m not sure of a shortcut on a PC, I just end up trying all those keys!! You might find this post helpful which shows the usual conversions from Mac keyboard shortcuts to PC keyboard shortcuts

Hi Mate, Yup it’s CTRL – the ALT allows keyboard access to the top menu – e.g. ALT + W for the Window menu.

For some reason I can’t switch between tools of the same group with just the keystroke anymore (for example the patch tool and healing brushes). I can’t figure out how to set the program so all I have to do is continue pressing j until I get the tool I want from that group. I’m sure it’s simple, but how can I fix it?

To switch to a tool that is under the same button – you need to hold down shift too, so for instance, to switch from brush/pencil/colour replacement you press shift+B to cycle through the tools.
