Thumbnail image contact sheet creation in Photoshop

If you have a whole bunch of images that you need printed up on pages then most people would reach for something like InDesign, creating the desired number of image boxes and importing the images in. This is ok with just a handful of images, but what if you had loads of images? What if you wanted to use the sheets as a reference and needed the file names on the sheets too – very time consuming! Well, help is at hand – those clever Folks at Adobe have nearly thought of everything… and this time you only need Photoshop!

If you ever have to perform a task like this you will wonder that there must be an easier way – and there is! The first step is to collect all your images into one location on your computer, you can use sub-folders too if you wish.

Then goto File>Automate>Contact Sheet 2. You are presented with options on page size, number of images per sheet and file labeling options. It will even tell you exactly how big each image will be on the page size you have defined and how many pages will be generated. Just point it at your folder of images, go and make a cup of tea, come back and it will be done… depending on how many images you have of-course!

The automation tools are very powerful in Photoshop and I will be covering the others in more detail in further posts.

Thank you for posting this process. Is there a way to get more space between the pictures?

Yup – simply tick off the option for ‘Auto Spacing’ and put in your own figures into the ‘horizontal’ and ‘vertical’ text fields to control the spacing manually between the images.

You are indeed ninja worthy. I’ve been using ps for years and didn’t know this feature was lurking off the file menu. thanks!
